When You Reach a Fork in the Road

Have you ever found yourself going down one path in your life, only to realize that a different way is calling your name?

As a multi-passionate entrepreneur, this is something I’ve struggled with many times.

Maybe things were going smoothly and suddenly you feel called to do something different.

Maybe you’ve struggled along to grow your business, and it’s time to pivot.

Or, remember just a few short years ago, when the world came to a halt and out of necessity you were forced to make a change?

Change is part of life. New seasons always bring about change.

I’m not partial to the quote, but it still rings true – “the only thing constant in life is change.”

I think the same is true for forks in the road. Let me share a story with you to explain.

A little over two years ago, a new-ish friend of mine, Amy Kathleen, and I, started a brand new business called The Collective. (This was after we had only ever met once IRL after she helped me setup and man my booth at the Pinners Conference in 2021.) After that crazy and incredible experience together, I knew we would be lifelong friends.

So for this new venture, we built the foundation, went through professional training, and created a solid business plan that we were excited to implement. We both had a desire to help women entrepreneurs grow their businesses.

Towards the end of our first year, we had learned so much, and had great ideas for the new year, but we both felt a shift coming and knew we needed to take things to the next level. So together we joined a mastermind led by Christy Wright.

As we learned, we grew, and so did our thinking. So did our beliefs. And most of all – so did our faith. Looking back, it was an incredible year of growth in all the very best ways!

Naturally, then, things in our business changed as well. We changed our model, then we changed our offering. It was a work in progress that we held with open hands. The end of our second year was coming up on us quickly, and we both felt as though another shift was coming, we just weren’t sure what yet.

Well, if you’re on my email list – then you’re probably aware of the new direction I’ve shifted to in my business this year:

  • Working on writing my book;
  • Becoming a Certified StoryBrand Guide;
  • Getting certified as a hope*writers coach;
  • And niching down to refocus my brand & design business (JH Creative) to help first-time authors successfully launch their books through my signature group coaching program.

It’s been a wild ride so far, but it feels as though God has moved mountains, and I can see him putting the puzzle pieces together.

Fast forward to today, where we announced something new (again). But this time, in the form of two individual paths we’re thrilled to go down in order to best serve our communities.

AK and I will always be linked – and more than anything – I’m incredibly grateful for this amazing woman who I’ve grown to love and deeply respect. I easily call her one of my closest friends – and that isn’t typical when business partners are no longer in business together. A rare thing indeed.

I can’t wait to continue to cheer her on in her endeavors. (Go follow her on IG – she’ll be announcing her new podcast this fall!)

Choosing which path to take when you reach a fork in the road is not easy. Especially if you’re someone like me who’s multi-passionate and has your hand in so many different things.

To help smooth out your path a little, I want to share a journaling exercise with a short list of powerful questions you can go through whenever you may be facing a fork in the road. I think these will help bring some clarity and confidence so you can move forward.

Note: I included a question that involves my own personal faith, but feel free to choose which questions you want to answer. I think any of these will help bring you closer to making a decision.

  1. Is (this new path) steering me closer to my goals?
  2. How will this path expand my freedoms: freedom of time, money, purpose, relationship?
  3. Will this new path bring more opportunities for joy (for both myself and those around me)?
  4. What do I want to maintain in six months? (In other words, will the path I take be something I want to/be able to maintain six months from now?)
  5. Where is God leading me? Is this path his will for my life?

If you’re a “list” person, you can also write down pros and cons based on these questions. List out the benefits for each path. List the negative consequences of both paths.

I want to encourage you – that while I truly believe there’s power in writing your thoughts down, praying over decisions, and seeking wise counsel, change will begin to occur when you take action.

You won’t know if it’s the next right step, until you actually take it.

So –

Sign up for the coaching group.

Reach out to that author you admire.

Schedule a meeting with that editor.

Send the query letter! (I’m preaching to myself now, friend!)

Your path will become clearer as you take steps down it. Nobody has this all figured out. We’re each taking one step at a time.
